2005 World Of Warcraft hailed as a peak time for gaming, you just had to be there

We all have that one game that just oozes nostalgia. I bet it’s already popped into your head. It’s likely a favourite of yesteryear - one where as soon as you think of it, you’re transported back to a golden era in your life. For many, that game is World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft is still around, of course, but as with any ongoing live service game, there are eras more fondly remembered than others. Over on Reddit, fans gathered to discuss their memories of playing the game during the 00s. Reddit user PJGraphicNovel started the post, writing, “While I don’t play anymore and haven’t played in ages, nothing will ever replace the wonder of being 16 and exploring World of Warcraft for the first time. I got the game for Christmas ‘05, and while I was never a serious player, questing and exploring made my heart sing. I swore I uncovered and found things that no one else had ever found, and it was so captivating to just wander. Naïve, yes, but what a feeling.”

Just reading that reminded me of my own heartwarming gaming memories. PJGraphicNovel certainly didn’t just get me in my nostalgic feels. The post has garnered 1,900 upvotes at the time of writing. Mister_Sasquatch replied with, “Finding a chest on a random mountainside while ignoring a quest you're in the middle of and getting a green that was barely an upgrade was peak gaming.”

Arctic16 said, “There’s nothing like vanilla WoW when it came out. Nothing. I was in high school and remember legitimately feeling like I was in another world. The scale, the social dynamics, the open-world PvP, the sense of exploration, the transportation system and how you moved across the world through dangerous areas. Nothing will touch that feeling ever again.”

User randysailer added, “World of Warcraft imo is the best game ever made. It might not be much now because everything has evolved and it's ageing but it's easily the best game I've ever played at the time.” Ah. Just release a comforting sigh and bask in the nostalgia.
