Perhaps with a dashing of Studio Ghibli too

When you look at video game release schedules, they’re often full of major AAA releases and whilst, yes, like everyone else I look forward to these, one of my favourite parts of each year is seeing which indies also emerge as potential hits.

One that’s caught my eye this time around is Emberstorm Entertainment’s upcoming single-player adventure RPG Reka.

Reka isn’t out just yet, with a release due in the next couple of months, but it’s already delighting players with its demo.

It combines the magic wielding of Hogwarts Legacy with the detailed lore of Skyrim - with, if you ask me, a major helping of Studio Ghibli thrown in there too.

I cannot look at Reka’s moving house without thinking about Howl’s Moving Castle.

Reka is centred around the legendary witch Baba Jaga: “Channel your inner witch! Build your cosy chicken-legged hut, practice witchcraft, and forage for ingredients in autumnal woodlands. Solve quests & uncover the great mysteries of [...] Baba Jaga.”

Dave The Diver was one of last year's standout indies.

“Begin your journey as Reka, an apprentice to the legendary witch, Baba Jaga. Deep in the autumnal woodlands, practise your witchcraft as you summon to life your own iconic chicken-legged cottage. Venture through the beautiful scenic world as you solve quests, forage for ingredients, and uncover Baba Jaga’s harrowing secret,” the synopsis teases.

Incorporating base building and crafting elements, players will be able to build their own “ambling cottage” which serves as a haven from the unpredictable horrors that lie outside.

It’s also the perfect place to hone your magic skills. After all, you are a witch. You’ll be able to harness the power of both nature and Earth’s spirits to form powerful spells.

These should help you aid local villagers or put a stop to any foes that may stand in your path.

There are plenty of quests to get involved with on your travels - plus you can tame and collect wildlife. Throw in the nicely detailed character creator and Reka pretty much has it all.

As I said, whilst we’re awaiting a release date, a demo is now live on Steam allowing players to explore the first section of the game.
