Nintendo Switch 2 launch game accidentally confirmed early

Yesterday, budding trainers everywhere tuned into the annual Pokémon Presents showcase in order to celebrate Pokémon Day 2024. While many of you were hoping to see Gold & Silver remakes announced, that’s not exactly what ended up being revealed.

I’ll be honest, while I enjoy aspects of Pokémon, I’m most definitely at the bottom of the GAMINGbible dedication rankings which meant I could sit back and enjoy the Presents with very little skin in the game. My colleagues, however, were on tenterhooks - glued to the screen with whispers of ‘I hope this gets announced’. I watched their palpable tension as we barrelled through the update towards the big final reveal, followed by their visible confusion when the last trailer began to play. Furrowed brows and the odd ‘huh’ led to the eventual reveal of Pokémon Legends Z-A.

Set to release in 2025, Game Freak’s Pokémon Legends A-Z will take us back to the Kalos region with the game reportedly taking place entirely in Lumiose City. The trailer didn’t exactly give much away. We saw Pikachu running through the city, with some Mega Evolutions teased. It’s a shame that the game will seemingly do away with the lush open-world exploration of Arceus but I’m somewhat intrigued by what Legends Z-A is teasing.

What’s perhaps even more exciting is the matter of which platforms the game will launch on. Yes, it is of course set to release on Nintendo Switch, but there may be an interesting tidbit hidden in the way The Pokémon Company phrased this. They wrote, “Pokémon Legends Z-A, an ambitious new entry to the Pokémon video game series, will launch on Nintendo Switch systems in 2025.”

“Systems”, plural. It looks as if Legends Z-A may launch on both the current Nintendo Switch and its upcoming successor, colloquially referred to as the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s been rumoured for quite some time now that Nintendo’s next console is on its way. It was originally believed to drop later this year, but word is that it’ll now land in early 2025. The question is: When will the lid finally be lifted on this exciting development?
