Nintendo Switch 2 specs confirmed in official document from Activision, not as powerful as we thought

When it was released in 2017, the Nintendo Switch quickly became one of Nintendo’s most popular systems with its hybrid features so you can play it on a TV or on the go.

That being said, even when the Nintendo Switch was released a few years after the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, it was not as powerful as its rivals. Yet, its unique hybrid features, gyro and touch controls helped it to stand out from its competitors. Not to mention that fantastic titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Super Mario Odyssey, Pokemon Legends: Arceus and Animal Crossing: New Horizons all helped to push the console into many households worldwide.

It's been six years since the initial launch of the Nintendo Switch and gossip on its successor is making the rounds. Most recently, reports claimed that a demo of the Nintendo Switch 2 was shown behind closed doors at Gamescom, and the new console would be as powerful as the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. However, new reports now claim that might not be the case.

In a new report from The Verge, the Nintendo Switch 2 might only be as powerful as a PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. If true, it feels somewhat underwhelming that Nintendo’s next console might be no more powerful than decade-old systems. At best, the Nintendo Switch might be a bit more powerful than the two consoles which were released in 2013.

As a result of Microsoft’s court battle with US market regulator the FTC, Activision’s head of platform strategy and partner relations Chris Schnakenberg suggested that the Nintendo Switch would be closer to last-gen consoles rather than PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

“Given the closer alignment to Gen8 platforms in terms of performance and our previous offerings on PS4/Xbox One, it is reasonable to assume we could make something compelling for the NG [New Gen] Switch as well,” read the document. “It would be helpful to secure early access to development hardware prototypes and prove that out nice and early.”

While it may feel disappointing that the Nintendo Switch 2 might not be as powerful as many of us had thought, there is a plus side to this story. For starters, some PS4 and Xbox One games still look fantastic. Sure, it’s possible that the Nintendo Switch 2 might not have ray-tracing, but if it at least had a 4K resolution, games would still look good on both the TV and on a small handheld screen. Furthermore, Nintendo has a great knack for exceeding expectations with ageing hardware.

What’s more, can you imagine how much a handheld Switch 2 would cost if it was on par with the PS5 and Xbox Series XS? That would certainly price out many fans and wouldn't fall in line with Nintendo’s more consumer-friendly pricing. That all being said, these rumours are unconfirmed by Nintendo, so we should take them with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise.
