Red Dead Redemption 3 looks set to be another prequel

Red Dead Redemption 3 looks set to be another prequel

We have to return to the past to see the future

Red Dead Redemption’s next instalment could be about to delve into the past once again, and we’re not even mad about it.

Speculation surrounding Red Dead Redemption 3 is rife.

From fans believing they’ve found the perfect new lead character, to pessimists who are worried the next game will be unplayable for millions – we can’t move for all the RDR3 rumours.

You don't choose the outlaw life of Red Dead Redemption 2, it chooses you

Just when we thought we’d heard it all, another piece of hearsay has emerged, this time from none other than John Marston’s actor, Rob Wiethoff.

His “million dollar voice” discussed all the possible avenues RDR3 could explore in a recent interview, while making sure not to give away too much.

Wiethoff said how, if Rockstar Games went past the Wild West era of Red Dead, gamers would end up seeing “a whole lot more cars” and that it would be “way more modern”. And you know what that means – it wouldn’t be “much of a western game” anymore.

From those words, fans deduce that the next adventure in this franchise has to be another prequel. It just has to be.

“It makes the most sense for the sake of narrative simplicity to make it a prequel about the gang,” explained a fan.

“We know the gang is famous, and teeters on legendary, but the specifics of how we got there is a world to explore.”

This is true: there’s much of the gang’s past that’s still not been unravelled from local legends and myths. Consequently, it feels like a solid starting point for RDR3.

Another user commented how they’d “opt for another prequel” if in Rockstar’s shoes, and given everything we already know/have played through.

Naturally, given how much love Wiethoff’s portrayal of John has generated, many players are hoping a “young John” will star in the next title.

It seems, we’ve not had our fill of John just yet.
